Getting an Iran Visa (Updated 15, October 2020)

Important: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has spread around the world, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has halted permits for all Tourist, Business, and Medical Visas.

Iran Visa Policy

As the law provides, citizens of all countries need a visa to visit Iran, whether a Visa on Arrival or an E-Visa, unless they are citizens of one of the visa-free countries. In the visa policy map below you can see the visa requirements for different countries around the world. Map of countries eligible for Iran visa

Visa On Arrival (VOA)

What is an Iran Visa on Arrival?

This option speaks for itself. You don’t need to get a visa before traveling to Iran. You can simply apply for an Iran Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport. Citizens of most countries can apply for an Iran VOA, and the process usually takes about an hour assuming the line is not too long. VOA is the most common option for getting an Iran visa, but it is not the safest option, because there is a small chance of rejection, which could make things complicated.

What Do You Need to Get an Iran Visa on Arrival?

  • First, you need to fill the visa on arrival forms
  • A passport with six-month validity
  • Two passport size pictures. They need to be in color with a white background. Women don’t need to wear Islamic hijab to apply for an Iran visa on arrival.
  • Having a return ticket is not obligatory but might ease the process of Iran visa on arrival; therefore, if you know exactly how much time you are going to spend in Iran, have your return ticket prepared at the airport.
  • A valid travel insurance that covers Iran is also needed. If you are using international insurance, make sure that it is mentioned in the insurance certificate that it covers Iran. The term “Worldwide” wouldn’t make the insurance acceptable in Iran. We recommend you to get your travel insurance for Iran from a local insurance provider. You can purchase your Travel Insurance provided by Termeh Travel, as well.
  • Having an invitation letter from a tourist agency, a friend, or the address of the residence you are going to spend the first night is essential. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs needs to check and confirm it.
  • You need to have enough cash in order to pay the visa fee, which is different for each country.

What Is the Process of Applying for Visa on Arrival in Iran?

The moment you arrive at the airport, after the travel insurance check, you need to apply for a visa on arrival. There is a section in the main hall of the airport which issues visas. At the desk, you need to tell the attendant that you want a visa on arrival. The attendant will hand you two forms about your personal information, such as your nationality, occupation, address, and the amount of money you need to pay to get a visa. Then you need to get in line to pay the visa fee.

It is important to double-check all the information on the forms to make sure everything is correct. You will hand your passport to the attendant and wait for them to call you. The application process can take hours, so you need to be prepared and patient. Finally, you can have your Iran visa and officially start your journey.

How Much Does It Cost to Get a Visa on Arrival in Iran?

The Iran visa on arrival fee can be different based on your nationality. You can find the amount of money you need to pay in order to get a visa on arrival here.

Where Can You Collect Your Iran Visa on Arrival?

Almost all of the main airports and also one port in Iran issue visas on arrival, so you can get your visa in:

  • Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran
  • Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran
  • Shahid Hashemi Nejad International Airport in Mashhad
  • Shahid Dastgheyb International Airport in Shiraz
  • Shahid Beheshti International Airport in Isfahan
  • Shahid Madani International Airport in Tabriz

If you are planning to travel to Iran overland, you need to apply for an Iran visa online in advance. By deciding to receive your visa in your country, you can collect it before starting your journey. You can also choose the nearest place of visa issue to the border of your choice and get your visa there.

Which Countries Can Have Iran Visa on Arrival?

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizens of the following countries are allowed to have an on arrival visa in Iran:

Iran Electronic Visa (E-Visa)

What Is an Iran E-visa (Iran Online Visa) and Why You Should Get One?

E-Visa is the electronic visa application system, launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to make the visa process easier. You can submit for an E-Visa on any eligible tourist agency or the MFA website (not recommended since the rejection rate is high, it’s better to apply via agencies). E-Visa is the most secure way to get a visa for Iran. You get your authorization code before starting your trip, and there is no chance of getting rejected after you arrive. The visa process will be much faster as you wouldn’t have to stand in lines, and it will be cheaper than VOA if you choose to pick your visa in an Iranian embassy or general consulate.

How to Check my Iran Visa (E-Visa) Status?

You can track your E-Visa application via the MFA official website or from the Termeh Travel Visa Tracking Page, if you have submitted your application through Termeh Travel.

What Is An Online Iran Visa Application Form ?

Once you visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (MFA), you will have to choose your preferred visa type, and begin your application. On the first page, you will have to fill in your personal information, upload your ID photo and scan of your passport, and choose your place of visa issue. You will then move on to the online visa application form. After filling the empty fields of that form, you will have to verify your email address and finally end your submission. After completing your application, you will have to wait for a specific amount of time for your visa to be granted.

On the Termeh Travel website, we ask you to fill the visa start form which asks the name, email and phone number of the group representative, and the number of applicants. The word "Representative" could mean the person in charge of a group, oneself, or even someone else. Simply put, the person we will be in contact with regarding the visa applications. After starting your online visa application, you must fill out the forms for each applicant; this means personal information, photo and passport scans, place of visa issuance, approximate arrival and departure times, and so on. For US, UK, and Canadian citizens, an extra step requires a fully detailed CV or Resume.

After filling the forms and successfully obtaining a Visa Grant, your Visa Grant Notice will be emailed to the representative email.

What Are The Iran Visa Requirements?

  1. You need to fill an online visa application form
  2. Upload a proper passport-style ID photo
  3. Upload a scan from the first page of your passport
You can use the Termeh Travel Visa Assistant Tool to see more details.

Our advice is to submit on trusted tourist agency sites due to the following reasons:
It takes only 2-3 Iran business days (Saturday to Wednesday excluding national holidays) for an agency to give you the confirmation code. While in some cases, it can take 10-15 days for the MFA to process your visa request. Since getting rejected by the MFA is very common, the MFA website usually asks applicants to apply through an eligible tourist agency. If the application gets denied, your travel agency can negotiate and complete demanded forms or documents and reapply; the MFA does not provide this option when you are applying for yourself. You can simply apply for your E-Visa for a reasonable price plus 24/7 online support on Termeh Travel.

After receiving your visa grant notice, you will need to submit your passport to the place you have chosen as the place of your visa issuance in your application form. You must submit your passport to your selected place of visa issue, in person.

You are also required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa stamp fee. The visa fee is determined by the type of visa you are granted.
